What is Carter's definition of integrity? What does it mean?
Carter’s definition of integrity is exactly as follows, “Integrity, as I will use the term, requires three steps: discerning what is right and what is wrong; acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost; and saying openly that you are acting on your understanding of right and wrong.” Carter is merely saying to know right from wrong, do what you want with the knowledge you know, and if asked voice what you understand of the situation.
When in a situation and you are forced to make a decision you have to be sure to what is right for you, the group, or whatever it is you are doing. You have to use reasoning to say that doing something one way is bad for the group and the other way is better. Once you have figured out what it is you are doing then you have to do it. You have to do it and stick by it no matter what! Tell people what you think about what you are doing. Tell them why the way you’re doing it is right and how the other way is wrong.
Carter's way of describing integrity very precise and understandable. The three steps of being true which are required for integrity is very simple and essential. We are to be honest to the people around us to obtain the true integrity. Integrity does not mean being true at the end but being true from the beginning. Among the thee steps which are “discerning what is right and what is wrong; acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost; and saying open¬ly that you are acting on your understanding of right and wrong”. Even though all thee steps are important I feel second one is most important. If you really want to be true to yourself we need to worry about consequences less than being honest. Honesty comes first.
ReplyDeleteCarters definition of integrity really made a lot of sense. I especially liked how being honest is a very important part but being honest for the benefit of yourself is not having integrity. Being honest where others will suffer is not having integrity, where in the end you will benefit from it.
